Close to the Mic aims to profile those in the professional podcast, radio and audio industry, sharing valuable insights on changes and trends, including promoting high-quality podcasts that have been produced in New Zealand, Australia, and Asia.

Our podcast review section is also another way to profile podcasts and boost the professionalism of the industry. Close to the Mic works with industry reviewers with backgrounds in radio, podcast production and audio storytelling to put an expert ear on your content and drive traffic to your podcast, whether it be the latest episodes of an existing season, or a new launch.

Meet the Editor

Sonia Yee is the founder and Editor in Chief for Close to the Mic.

A multi-international award-winning producer and former broadcaster, she specialises in long-form narrative documentaries and podcasts and formed the foundation of her craft at Radio New Zealand (RNZ) where she worked for more than a decade.

Over her career she has covered everything from fashion and lifestyle to science, social history, technology, arts and culture, business, and more.

A unique creative approach to her work has seen her win four New York Festivals Radio Awards, including a Silver (2023) for seven-part documentary podcast series Across the Board , and Gold (2019) for eight-part documentary series Beyond Kate - 125 years of women’s suffrage in New Zealand.

Articles written by Sonia (formerly Sonia Sly) have been published by RNZ, NZ Herald, Fairfax Media, and more recently, Boardroom Magazine (print).
